FENTY CORP is here – and just as the world expected, Rihanna Robyn Fenty has continued to live up to her standard of excellence.
It’s been over 30 years since an original fashion house was created at the luxury goods company LVMH: Moët Hennessy – Louis Vuitton, but that fact is not one that could have deterred award-winning singer and CFDA fashion icon Rihanna, from making her mark in fashion history.
This is how, in 2019, the Barbados-born star has become not only the first woman to establish her own LVMH maison, but also the first black woman to do so.
The inception of the FENTY luxury label is therefore a historic moment for the culture.
And we wouldn’t expect anything less from the founder of Fenty Beauty, who showed long-existing cosmetics brands that it’s possible to produce foundation in every shade. She’s proven that lingerie can be designed with every body type in mind. And she’s used her brands to portray the intersectionality of inclusivity, showing that it goes beyond merely casting one atypical person to front a campaign.
But before I get emotional over Rihanna’s groundbreaking moves in two usually intertwined industries – fashion and beauty – which have often excluded any deviations from ‘conventional’ beauty standards, let’s just take a moment to appreciate her first FENTY offering.
From Barbados to Paris
This is the first and (currently) only post on the luxury label’s Instagram page. It journeys us through the Man Down hitmaker’s Barbados origins all the way to the cosmopolitan city of Paris.
Future so bright, you need XL sunnies
As if there was ever any doubt.
Anyway, one of the first key items that form part of Rihanna’s inaugural collection are these square-frame oversized sunglasses. Not too long before the official announcement of FENTY CORP, RiRi was spotted in New York already rocking her stunners.
And in her preview shoot, Rihanna is seen wearing these signature sunglasses.
T Magazine exclusive
In an exclusive preview shoot with New York Times Style magazine in their first-ever digital cover, fans get a taste for what’s coming from the Fenty maison. Pastel hues, wispy white shirts, oversized blazers, button-down mini dresses, what appears to be a reimagined Canadian tuxedo, and sandals fit for white pedicures all make up the collection that has Rihanna’s undeniable stamp on it.
These luxury streetwear ensembles are somewhat reminiscent of looks we’ve seen the FENTY founder donning before:
Attending Vogue Forces of Fashion in Tom Ford, 2017
Meeting France’s First Lady Brigitte Macron in France, 2017
At a Madeworn x Roc96 Pop-Up Event in L.A. in 2017
This is perhaps testament to how Rihanna will stay true to her style DNA, while also continuing to make collaboration an integral part of her brand’s ethos.
And to say we are excited for the next chapter of the Fenty legacy is an understatement, because if it were a book, it would be one we can’t put down.
