Kareena Kapoor became pregnant and it became an issue of national interest. While Kareena was unfazed by all the attention and chose to carry on with her work and assignments, the media couldn’t get over the fact that she was working throughout her pregnancy and that too with so much chutzpah and élan!
“I’m pregnant, not a corpse. And what maternity break? It’s the most normal thing on earth to produce a child. It is high time the media back off, and stop treating me any different than I ever was. Stop making it a national casualty. We are in 2016, not in the 1800s. Probably, even at that time, people were way more civilised and normal than the way the media is behaving and speculating now,” Kareena had lashed out at the media at that time.
What caught our attention was the way media glorified something that is so, so normal. Yes, there are hundreds of other women who work during their entire pregnancy. Some have also reported attending office till the day of their delivery. Here are three amazing women who are also working during their pregnancy, just like Kareena Kapoor:
1. Poorva Bhatikar
For Poorva Bhatikar, who works as the Category Manager with Mattel Toys, India, the thought of not working during the pregnancy never crossed her mind.
“It didn’t really feel very different and it never occurred to me that I have the option to not work just because I’m pregnant considering I had no health problems. There were phases during early pregnancy where nausea and fatigue would hit me out of nowhere during the day, and I couldn’t let it show, but it got better as the pregnancy progressed,” says Poorva, who is in her ninth month of pregnancy.
Of course, there were bad days as well all thanks to the raging pregnancy hormones. But her passion for her work, made her get up and go to work every day.
“The fact that I quite enjoy what I do and secondly, I felt that getting up, getting out and keeping busy made me feel much better than I would have, staying home in bed. There were, of course, days where I chose to work from home or take a sick day,” she says.
Poorva also avers that it is important for people to take pregnancy as a normal phase of a woman’s life and as far as you are healthy, you should keep on working.
“Unless there is a serious risk to the baby, I think the worst thing you can do is restrict physical (and mental) exertion. It might serve one well till the baby comes but taking care of a child can be much more physically demanding. Pregnancy should be a gentle run up to gear up physically for what’s to come,” she adds.

2. Priyanka Sharma
Priyanka Sharma, who works as an Assistant Professor in an Engineering College, feels that if there are no health problems, working during pregnancy is actually quite smooth.
“I am currently in my seventh month of my pregnancy, I am feeling as energetic and delightful as I ever can. I live with my in-laws, my routine starts at 6 in the morning and I perform all the household chores with the help of my mother-in-law and my house help. After coming from college I have my science coaching classes and after that I prepare dinner for my family. So you can see that I have quite a busy day,” says Priyanka.
There are some bad days, but mostly she gets over it. “Somedays, I feel tired and need that much-needed rest, but mostly it’s a smooth ride for me. Now that my baby is growing up I can feel him kicking and I enjoy it. My day ends with me talking to my baby and he completely responds to me and I feel happier to a whole new level,” she adds.
Priyanka also says that while people around you might change and treat you differently, it totally depends on how you take it.
“I will only advise other women to enjoy whatever they do during pregnancy. I don’t think it will make any difference in a woman’s perspective of looking towards herself. I make myself a priority and treat myself like a princess. This is how I deal with it. I have a life growing inside me which makes me feel like a superwoman…and every woman is a superwoman because only she has the power to give birth to a new life.,” she says.
On the unnecessary advice that she gets from everyone, she says that she has a filter in place. “There are 100 mouths, 100 brains, 100 thoughts. I feel it’s your child and nobody can think or act best other than you. Take the advice which is sensible and leave out the rest,” she says.

3. Mamta Lakhani
For Mamta Lakhani, her baby started going to school much before it came into the world as she is a teacher by profession and her baby learned all the lessons till the last day of her pregnancy. Mamta was just blessed with a baby boy and she was, in fact, working till the last week of her pregnancy.
Mamta feels that there’s nothing a pregnant woman can’t do. “Maa is a beautiful word with the whole world inside it,” she says ecstatically.
“Who can stop you from doing all your regular duties during pregnancy, if you don’t want to. Like any other woman I was also performing the various household chores, going to school as well as taking care of my elder son and my family during my pregnancy,” says Mamta.
“I enjoyed the entire pregnancy and was working throughout the nine months. As your elders always say active mothers mean active babies and trust me my baby is as active as I was during my pregnancy,” she sums up.
