Sycamore Youth Center Expands Ballroom Dance Classes to Include Families

STEUBENVILLE, OH – The Sycamore Youth Center is broadening its community outreach by offering ballroom dance classes that now cater to not only children aged 12 and older but also their siblings and parents. The initiative aims to foster a family-friendly environment and promote social interaction through the art of dance.

Executive Director Bobbyjon Bauman announced the new format at the center, praising the addition of a familial aspect to the dance classes. “We are excited to offer this opportunity for families to engage with one another in a positive and enriching environment,” he remarked.

The classes will be facilitated by local dance educators Dan and Mary Selmeczy, a highly regarded couple known for their professional approach and nurturing teaching style. According to Bauman, the Selmeczys’ expertise in dance instruction is well-established within the community, and they are adept at creating a relaxed atmosphere conducive to learning.

Participants in the ballroom classes can expect to learn the foundational steps of popular dances such as the Swing, Rumba, Waltz, and Foxtrot. These dances are not only entertaining, but they also provide important social interaction and physical activity—two components that are essential for developing essential life skills.

Bauman emphasized that the goals of these classes extend beyond mastering dance steps. “Ballroom dancing encourages youth to cultivate self-confidence, learn respect for others, and develop teamwork skills,” he explained. He believes that these invaluable character traits will serve participants well as they transition into adulthood.

In addition to the expanded class offerings, the schedule has been adjusted. Classes will now take place from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. every Thursday. The current series commenced on Thursday and will continue on subsequent dates: February 5, February 19, February 26, March 5, March 19, and March 26.

Interested individuals can enroll in the classes by visiting the Sycamore Youth Center’s official website at sycamorecenter.com/classes. For further inquiries, Dan Selmeczy can be reached at (530) 519-2638.

This new initiative not only brings families together through dance but also enriches the cultural landscape of our local community. As communities continue to explore ways to connect and engage, programs like these at the Sycamore Youth Center serve as shining examples of how the arts can unify and inspire families.
