Oldham County, Ky. — Local Teens Unite to Assist Neighbors Following Record Snowfall
In the face of harsh winter weather, communities often rally together to support one another, and this spirit of cooperation is exemplified by a dedicated group of high school students in Oldham County, Kentucky. Following a recent snowstorm that blanketed parts of the region with up to eight inches of snow, these young volunteers have taken it upon themselves to clear driveways for residents in need, particularly the elderly.
The initiative, spearheaded by Chuck Young and his peers, was born out of a desire to lend a hand following the significant snowstorm in 2025. Recognizing the challenges posed by heavy snowfall, especially for older individuals who might struggle with mobility, Young and his friends sought to offer their assistance. “We’ve been trying to get out early and help as many people as we can,” Young stated. “We jump in whenever we see someone shoveling or struggling with their driveways.”
This year, the group has expanded its efforts significantly by adding two new snow blowers, allowing them to reach and assist a greater number of homes than in the past, when tools were limited to just shovels. Their outreach began with a call for help on local Facebook groups, and the response was overwhelmingly positive, resulting in a flood of requests for service.
Operating from early morning hours, starting as early as 5 a.m., and continuing into the evening, the students have been busy clearing a remarkable 26 or more driveways each day. “Many of the residents we help are elderly, and they often need assistance,” shared Lucas Young, Chuck’s brother. “We just do it because it’s the right thing to do.”
Among the numerous uplifting stories shared, one particularly resonated with the group. “There was an older gentleman whose wife is a nurse and needed to get to work at the hospital,” volunteer Hunter Hopkins recounted. “We cleared his driveway early yesterday so he could get her there safely.”
Despite the physical demands of the work, the volunteers express a profound sense of fulfillment and camaraderie from their efforts. For them, the labor of love is not just about the snowy driveways; it is also about forming bonds with one another and fostering community spirit. “It’s fun out here,” Lucas commented. “I just love being with my friends while helping others.”
As Oldham County Schools resumed non-traditional instruction (NTI) days in response to ongoing weather conditions, the group remains committed to their mission. While they do not charge for their services, they welcome tips to help cover equipment and material costs.
This heartwarming initiative not only highlights the resilience found within the community but serves as a reminder of the importance of kindness and cooperation, especially during challenging times. As these young volunteers continue their work, they embody the spirit of neighborly support that is vital to sustaining the community fabric during severe weather events.
