This decision was made by Superintendent Dr. James Walsh after a comprehensive assessment of the roads and bus stops in the district, which indicated significant hazards for students.

Superintendent Walsh noted that extensive snow accumulation and icy streets have created perilous conditions, leaving children with no safe locations to wait for school buses. “There’s no safe place for the kids to stand except on the street,” he remarked, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

District officials highlighted that the present winter conditions—including narrow roadways, persistent ice, and extreme cold—have rendered travel to school unsafe. The effectiveness of road salt has been severely hindered by the frigid temperatures, which has allowed ice to remain on roads and sidewalks. “The salt is not working; it’s too cold for the salt to be effective,” Dr. Walsh explained, painting a grim picture of the ongoing winter challenges.

Given the complexities associated with travel and safety, district leaders determined that delaying school start times would not alleviate the risks. Instead, they chose to prioritize the safety of students, parents, and staff by extending remote learning. Dr. Walsh also emphasized the need for timely communication with families, particularly working parents who must navigate their childcare and employment needs. “We’re going to have to give them as much notice as we can,” he stated.

During the remote learning period, students and staff will adhere to a 2-Hour Delay schedule, and the district will not provide transportation services for students attending parochial, specialty, or vocational schools.
