Calling Young Physicians to the 2nd Annual Teddy Bear Hospital

LEXINGTON, KY. (February 24, 2024) — The Kentucky Children’s Hospital (KCH) and The Living Arts & Science Center (LASC) are set to host the second annual Teddy Bear Hospital, an interactive event designed to educate and reassure children about healthcare environments. This year’s event will take place on March 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at LASC located at 362 N. Martin Luther King Blvd. While the Teddy Bear Hospital primarily targets children aged 3 to 11, it welcomes participants of all ages to join in the experience, encouraging attendees to bring their beloved stuffed animals along.

The Teddy Bear Hospital creates a playful setting where children can engage in role-play, simulating medical procedures on their toys. This approach aims to demystify the hospital experience, alleviating any fears or anxieties children may have regarding medical visits. “Play is a powerful tool for children, helping them make sense of new and sometimes overwhelming experiences,” stated Jennifer Guilliams, director of the Child and Family Life Program at KCH. She further added, “By using familiar toys, we can help them understand what happens at the hospital. While no parent wants to imagine their child in the hospital, research shows that kids cope better when they are prepared for what to expect.”

The event will feature various treatment areas modeled after real hospital facilities, including an operating room and radiology unit. KCH medical professionals will be on-site to guide the children through activities, providing educational insights into medical procedures, routine examinations, and hospital operations.

Generously supported by the University of Kentucky Federal Credit Union and Walmart, the event aims to create an engaging and educational experience. Participants will have the opportunity to wear medical attire while conducting check-ups on their toys, reinforcing the connection between play and learning.

Jeanette Tesmer, executive director of LASC, expressed enthusiasm for this collaboration, noting, “The Living Arts & Science Center provides a unique and welcoming space for families to experience art and science in an engaging way. Last year’s event was a huge success, so we’re thrilled to partner with KCH again to provide kids and their families this opportunity to learn and have fun.”

Since its establishment in 1968, LASC has been committed to offering hands-on arts and science education, led by professional educators and active artists. Like many programs at LASC, the Teddy Bear Hospital is free and open to the public.

For families with children who have sensory needs, a quieter, more controlled environment will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on March 8. This special hour will allow five families to participate every ten minutes, ensuring a comfortable experience for all. Those interested are encouraged to register for the sensory hour through the provided link.

This innovative event not only equips children with knowledge about healthcare but also fosters a sense of community and support among families, illustrating the power of learning through play in an accessible context.
