The Virginia Cooperative Extension office in Petersburg is hosting a free program titled “Pathways to Effective Parenting” (PEP), aimed at enhancing parenting and communication skills among parents, grandparents, childcare providers, and anyone interested in fostering better relationships with children. These classes will run from January 16 to March 13, 2024, and consist of eight weekly sessions held every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Extension office located at 3811 Corporate Road. Interested participants must pre-register to secure their spots, as registration is required for attendance.
The PEP classes cover a broad range of topics crucial for effective parenting, including child brain development, strategies for addressing the needs of preschoolers, elementary school-aged children, and teens. The curriculum aims to empower participants with the confidence and knowledge necessary to navigate various challenges associated with raising children. Key areas of focus include distinguishing between discipline and punishment, understanding the effects of stress on family dynamics, and implementing effective communication practices.
According to the Virginia Cooperative Extension, the program is designed not only to enhance participants’ parenting abilities but also to create a supportive community where caregivers can share experiences and strategies. By engaging with experts and peers, parents are expected to gain valuable insights into child development and the complexities of adolescent behavior. Individuals completing the eight-week program will receive certificates recognizing their commitment to improving their parenting skills.
For those unable to attend the January session, the Virginia Cooperative Extension will offer another series of classes from March 27 to May 15, 2024, ensuring that more individuals can access these essential resources.
Accessibility is a priority for the program. Participants with disabilities who require assistive devices or accommodations are encouraged to contact Katrina Kirby at (804) 733-1880 or via email at kirby2@vt.edu. Requests for accommodations should be made at least five days before the event to ensure appropriate arrangements can be implemented.
For further information regarding the PEP classes or to inquire about registration, interested individuals can reach out to the Extension office at (804) 733-1880 or via email. This initiative reflects a commitment to supporting families within the Petersburg community, underscoring the importance of effective parenting strategies in fostering healthy child development.
