Fairmont State University Expands Program for Foster Youth Amid Housing Challenges
Fairmont State University (FSU) has announced a significant expansion of its on-campus housing initiatives designed to support foster youth, specifically targeting teenagers who are often at risk of instability and homelessness. The program, known as the Middle College initiative, initially launched in the 2024 academic year to address the pressing need for stable housing options for older adolescents within West Virginia’s child welfare system. As of this school year, FSU will extend its services to include local foster children living with relatives or foster families, enhancing academic opportunities and providing a nurturing environment.
Currently, West Virginia faces a critical shortage of foster homes, with over 6,000 children in the child welfare system. Many of these youths are older teenagers, who statistically become less likely to be placed in foster care as they age. Prichard Hall, a residence hall at FSU, has been designated as main housing for participants of the Middle College program.
