Yale Law School Expands Access with Hurst Horizon Scholarship Program
Yale Law School has announced the awarding of its prestigious Hurst Horizon Scholarship to 96 students for the 2025-26 academic year, marking a significant step in promoting access to legal education for individuals from lower-income backgrounds. This initiative, now in its fourth year, has increased the number of full-tuition, need-based scholarships available, reflecting a broader commitment to inclusivity and financial support for diverse student bodies.
Since its inception in 2022, the Hurst Horizon Scholarship has experienced remarkable growth, with the number of recipients nearly doubling from its first year when 51 students were granted the scholarship. Presently, over 15% of J.D. students at Yale benefit from this program, which serves students in the classes of 2026, 2027, and 2028.
The Soledad ’92 and Robert Hurst Horizon Scholarship Program is designed specifically for students whose familial financial assets are below 0,000. Eligibility for scholarships was broadened in the fall of 2023, allowing students from families with incomes up to 200% of federal poverty guidelines to apply. In its second year, 75 scholarships were awarded, followed by 89 in the third year, indicating a steady trend towards greater accessibility.
Interim Dean Yair Listokin expressed enthusiasm over the program’s impact. “We are thrilled to see how much of a difference the Hurst Horizon Scholarship Program has made for our students over the course of the last few years,” he remarked, emphasizing the program’s transformative potential.
As Associate Dean Miriam Ingber noted, “The growth of the Hurst Horizon Scholarship program means that brilliant and talented students who have earned a place at Yale Law School can enroll here with less apprehension about debt.” This sentiment reflects a consistent focus within Yale Law School on alleviating the financial burdens that typically accompany a legal education, allowing students to prioritize their academic pursuits rather than financing their schooling.
Financial aid remains a cornerstone of Yale’s educational philosophy, with the law school distributing over million annually from its endowment income to support need-based financial aid initiatives. Approximately 70% of Yale Law students receive these generous financial aid packages, which dramatically reduce the cost of attendance.
The Hurst Horizon Scholarship has not only benefited individual students like Justin Lutz ’26, who described the scholarship as a means to potentially break the “intergenerational cycle of poverty” for his family, but it has also positioned Yale Law School as a leader in advocating for need-based aid. Notably, Yale is among only two law schools in the United States that grant financial assistance based solely on need. The school’s recent decision to withdraw from the U.S. News and World Report rankings further underscores its commitment to prioritizing access over competitiveness contingent on merit-based scholarships.
