Houston County School District to Provide Health Services for Families

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. – The Houston County School District is poised to address critical healthcare needs within the community by hosting a health clinic at the Lindsey Student Support Center. This initiative, branded as Houston Cares, will offer free and reduced-cost medical, dental, and vision examinations on February 7 and 8, 2024.

According to a Forbes Advisor study, approximately 11.7% of Georgians lack health insurance, highlighting a significant gap in access to essential healthcare services. In response to community needs, the Lindsey Student Support Center is taking proactive measures by partnering with various organizations to offer health services to students, families, and community members. “Before we opened the Lindsey Student Support Center, we conducted a survey and received over 15,000 responses. Medical care, dental, and vision services were consistently identified as high-priority needs by parents,” said Bonnie Brown, Coordinator for Student Services.

The Houston Cares event marks its second annual occurrence, with the primary objective of alleviating the economic pressures families face in accessing healthcare. Jacqueline Guardia, a local parent, has previously benefited from the initiative. She remarked, “It reduces the economic burden. For many families, especially in today’s economy, knowing that your school district is working to provide such services really makes a difference.”

Among the partners involved is the Trinity School of Medicine, which provides volunteers, including medical students from its Warner Robins program. Alice Opoku, a medical student, expressed her commitment to preventative care, stating, “Providing medical education at the primary level is crucial in preventing chronic disorders down the line. It is deeply rewarding to contribute to health services in this way.”

In addition to immediate care during the Houston Cares event, the Lindsey Student Support Center will continue to provide health appointments on the last Tuesday of each month. This ongoing service is further supported by the Houston County Health Department, ensuring that residents have access to follow-up care when needed.

To accommodate families and promote inclusivity, Mamás Latinas de Middle Georgia will offer bilingual assistance during the clinic, facilitating communication for Spanish-speaking families.

Parents and community members are encouraged to register for the event on the Lindsey Student Support Center’s website, although walk-ins will also be welcomed. The health clinic will operate on Friday from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Lindsey Student Support Center, located at 81 Tabor Drive in Warner Robins.

For more information about the health services and to register for the event, interested parties can visit the Lindsey Student Support Center’s registration page. As the Houston County School District continues to focus on the well-being of its students and community, initiatives such as Houston Cares exemplify a commitment to enhancing access to vital health resources.
