Welcome to Elmhurst University: A New Academic Adventure Begins
As the sun rose over Elmhurst University last week, the campus buzzed with excitement and emotion as more than 630 new students, alongside their families and friends, arrived for New Student Orientation. This lively kickoff to the 2024-25 academic year wasn’t just about settling into their new surroundings; it marked the beginning of a transformative journey for these budding scholars.
With the official start of classes set for Monday, August 26, first-year and transfer students embraced a whirlwind of orientation activities designed to familiarize them with college life. For many, this journey began a few days earlier, as eager students unpacked boxes and furnished their residence halls, transforming them into unique living spaces. A dedicated team of student-athletes lent a helping hand, carrying everything from duffel bags to mini-fridges, ensuring that the move-in day proceeded smoothly.
Take Coen Nystrom and Ryan Gatto, who not only share a room in Niebuhr Hall but also represent Elmhurst on the men’s lacrosse team. Hailing from Detroit, Coen is a business major who expressed enthusiasm for both the upcoming lacrosse season and the opportunity to forge new friendships. His parents, Don and Tracy Nystrom, are determined to attend as many games as they can, embodying the supportive spirit of the Elmhurst community.
“I like that he has a ready-made family in his teammates,” remarked Tracy, who highlighted the importance of community as Coen embarks on this new chapter. “I hope he embraces this new beginning.”
Meanwhile, in Schick Hall, Veronica Cosio and her parents were busy setting up her side of the room, proudly wearing “Proud of My Bluejay” T-shirts. Living only a short drive away in Addison, the Cosios are keen on giving Veronica the complete college experience, emphasizing that living on campus will help her fully integrate into the Elmhurst community.
Veronica, a psychology major, illustrated her excitement about independence, stating, “I’ll miss home, but I’m really excited to be more independent.” Notably, she’s poised to be a part of Elmhurst’s inaugural women’s wrestling team, showing her readiness to embrace new challenges.
Her father, Mauro Cosio, shared heartfelt advice: “I just tell her to be herself and enjoy these opportunities. While it’s not always easy, she just needs to show up and give it her best effort.”
Throughout New Student Orientation, students engaged in activities designed to build connections and foster a sense of belonging. They participated in team-building exercises such as a thrilling zipline adventure course and made a positive impact through community service at the nonprofit organization Feed My Starving Children. These experiences are vital, shaping students’ personal development and preparing them for both academic life and future careers.
The spirit of camaraderie didn’t end with the zipline. Students also got acquainted with faculty members who would guide them during their First Year Seminar course, as well as peers from their chosen majors. These initial interactions help lay the groundwork for an inclusive and engaged campus culture.
During the New Student Convocation, Elmhurst University President Troy VanAken delivered an inspiring address, urging students to support one another and to foster an environment of respect and inclusivity. His message was clear: “A strong sense of belonging is key to helping you successfully complete your academic journey.” He encouraged students to contribute positively to the campus culture, reminding them that they all deserve to feel welcome.
As these new students take their first steps into college life, they are not just preparing for classes; they are embarking on a journey of personal growth and lifelong friendships.
