Port Washington Police District Hosts Youth Police Academy for High School Students
The Port Washington Police District recently held its Youth Police Academy on Saturday, November 15, offering a unique opportunity for local high school students to gain an insightful perspective into law enforcement. Hosted at the Nassau County Police Academy in Garden City, the one-day event catered to students in grades 9 through 12, providing them with an immersive experience in various aspects of police work.
Participants engaged in a comprehensive curriculum designed to provide a realistic portrayal of the demands and responsibilities associated with police duties. The program covered essential elements such as physical training, defensive tactics, ethics, leadership, and teamwork. Students were able to participate in practical exercises that are fundamental to an officer’s daily responsibilities.
Moreover, attendees had the chance to explore specialized police units, including aviation, mounted patrol, and K-9 operations. One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity to navigate an obstacle course developed to mimic the challenges law enforcement officers encounter in real-world scenarios. This hands-on experience aimed to foster a better understanding of the physical and mental rigors of police work.
At the conclusion of the academy, each participant was awarded an official Police Academy Certificate, symbolizing their commitment and participation in the program. Port Washington Police Department Chief Robert Del Muro emphasized the significance of the event, stating, “Our Youth Police Academy is about building connections, understanding, and respect. We want students to see firsthand what it means to be a modern police officer—the training, the teamwork, and the dedication it requires. This program gives young people a chance to engage directly with our officers, ask questions, and discover whether law enforcement might be a future calling for them.”
