Marathon County Addresses Growing Childcare Needs with ARPA Funding and Education Initiatives

MOSINEE, Wis. – As the demand for affordable childcare continues to escalate, Governor Tony Evers has urged Republicans in the Wisconsin state legislature to approve a substantial 0 million package aimed at reducing childcare costs across the state. In Marathon County, this call to action resonates deeply, as local officials recognize the urgent need for enhanced childcare services.

In response to this growing concern, Marathon County has allocated 0,000 from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to support childcare initiatives over the coming year. This funding will be directed towards a scholarship program managed by Childcaring Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to matching families in Central Wisconsin with essential early education resources. The scholarship program aims to subsidize training for prospective childcare providers, covering approximately 150 hours of required coursework essential for employment in licensed childcare facilities across Wisconsin.

“Participants will engage in both in-person and virtual classes designed to equip them with the foundational skills necessary for success in the childcare field,” explained Kelly Borchardt, Executive Director of Childcaring Inc. The curriculum will include vital topics such as child development principles, essential safety regulations, and effective strategies for infant and toddler care.

Individuals interested in benefiting from this scholarship program must register by January 31. The first training session is scheduled for February 13, with courses concluding in August of this year. Currently, about 15 spots are available for this program, with five already filled.

Recognizing that many families in Central Wisconsin are facing significant challenges in securing affordable childcare options, Childcaring Inc. also offers resources and assistance for parents. The organization provides free referrals to accredited childcare providers and, for eligible families, options for low-cost or free childcare services. Additionally, Childcaring collaborates with various community partners to equip families with the necessary tools to select quality childcare programs.

“Families are currently dedicating approximately 20% of their household income to childcare alone,” stated Borchardt. “This is neither sustainable nor a viable business model. To foster a healthier family and economic environment, we must pursue support for childcare from state, federal, and local community levels.”

For those seeking further information or to apply for the scholarship program, Childcaring Inc. can be found at 850 WI-153 Suite F in Mosinee and serves a broad geographic area covering Adams, Clark, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Portage, Taylor, Waushara, and Wood Counties. Interested individuals can find additional details and enrollment options through their official website.

As the situation regarding childcare access evolves, initiatives such as these are vital in addressing the immediate needs of families and ensuring they have access to the essential resources required for nurturing their children’s early development.
