New ‘Sora Shorts’ Film Created By AI Set to Premiere at Tribeca Film Festival

by Topwitty

The upcoming Tribeca Film Festival will feature a unique addition to its lineup this year: films created by OpenAI. These five short films were crafted using OpenAI’s Sora, a text-to-video model that generates video clips based on textual descriptions. Filmmakers had a short timeline to complete their projects, in the spirit of exploration.

The creators were given early access to Sora for this project and had the freedom to shape their films as long as they followed agreements established with the DGA, WGA, and SAG regarding the use of AI in 2023. Jane Rosenthal, co-founder and CEO of Tribeca Enterprises, expressed excitement about the creative possibilities that AI-generated films bring, alongside traditional storytelling methods.

Participating filmmakers, including Bonnie Discepolo, Ellie Foumbi, Nikyatu Jusu, Reza Sixo Safai, and Michaela Ternasky-Holland, will showcase their work on June 15th at the Tribeca Screening Room. Following the debut, a discussion will be held with the filmmakers, offering insights into their experience with the tool.

OpenAI’s COO, Brad Lightcap, highlighted the filmmakers’ creativity in utilizing Sora and expressed eagerness to explore how the tool can further support creative endeavors. OpenAI is also planning to make the tool available to visual artists and designers for feedback, although there is no set timeline for public release at this time.
